Emigration #4 to the U.S., 1873

The fourth and final emigration from Ostheim, France to the United States was of my greater-grandfather, David Barbaras, who embarked from Havre on the ship Thorwaldsen and arrived in New York on March 10, 1873. No emigration record has yet been found for the teenager and he mysteriously never revealed his origins to anyone. Currently, the first record of him is in Milwaukee in 1874. For his entire life, he never once mentioned the existence of any other Barbaras in the United States and did not discourage his descendants from assuming that they were the only ones. We did not know otherwise until the early 1990s when the French researcher, Guy Barbaras, located my brother in San Francisco and provided my family with its first historical data and contacts in the United States.
La quatrième et l'émigration finale d'Ostheim, France aux Etats-Unis a été celle de mon arrière grand-père, David Barbaras, qui a quitté Havre sur le bateau Thorwaldsen et qui est arrivé à New York le 10 Mars, 1873. On n'a pas encore trouvé un enregistrement d'émigration pour le jeune et c'est un mystère pourquoi il n'a jamais révélé ses origines. Maintenant, sa première trace est à Milwaukee en 1874. Pendant toute sa vie, il n'a jamais fait mention de l'existence d'autres Barbaras aux Etats-Unis et il n'a pas découragé ses descendants d'assumer qu'ils étaient les seuls. Nous ne connaissions autrement jusqu'au début des années 1990 quand le chercheur, Guy Barbaras, a trouvé mon frère à San Francisco et a donné ma famille des premières informations généalogiques et des contacts aux Etats-Unis.
